The Newman Shield: 5-a-side Football
The Newman Shield is a quarterly, face-to-face sporting competition in memory of Mr Paul Newman. This quarter: 5-a-side football. The objective is to have fun, promote teamwork and friendly competition, all while improving physical and mental wellbeing.
Key rules
- 5 players on the pitch, rolling substitutions
- Fairly contested football; respect officials and opponents
- No immediate passing back to the goalkeeper
- Yellow card = two-minute sin bin; red card = off the pitch
- Keeper stays in the box; outfield players stay out of it
- Head-height rule applies

- Captains: have your team warmed up and ready for 12:00 kick-off
Bring / provided
- Bring: shin pads, suitable footwear (hard-ground boots or trainers), your own water
- Provided: bibs, footballs, ice bucket; cafe, toilets and parking on site
- If you're not playing, help with administration and support your section
Medical
Medical coverage provided by SO, as for G4 activities, with the facility's local procedures and 999 available if required.
Format and results
Round robin on 2 pitches, 18-minute matches - win 3, draw 1, loss 0 (tie-breaks: points, head-to-head, goal difference, most wins). Awards for Golden Boot, Best Goalkeeper and Player of the Tournament. Results announced after the event and confirmed within 24 hours.
